Ditch the Gel. Try an Energy Waffle Instead.

Ditch the Gel. Try an Energy Waffle Instead.

Okay, real talk. How many times have you choked down an energy gel mid-run, made a face like you just drank dish soap, and thought there has to be something better than this?

Same. Which is kind of why Grynd exists.

If you haven't tried an energy waffle yet, stick around, because once you do, you're probably not going back to gels.

So what's wrong with gels, anyway?

Nothing, technically. They do the job. But "technically works" isn't exactly a glowing endorsement for something you're supposed to eat while you're already suffering.

Most gels are aggressively sweet, weirdly thick, and pretty rough on your stomach, especially when you're pushing hard and your gut is the last thing that wants to deal with a sugar bomb. GI issues during long runs or rides are more common than people talk about, and a lot of the time, the culprit is what you're using to fuel.

There's also the flavour fatigue thing. By hour three of a long ride, the thought of another gel might actually make you want to quit. And that's a problem, because if you're not fuelling consistently, you're going to crack.

Okay, so what's an energy waffle?

Think of it like a soft, chewy waffle sandwich - thin, flat, and packed with fast-digesting carbs to keep you moving. The concept actually comes from Dutch stroopwafels, which have been a staple among cyclists in Europe for a long time. You might've seen them passed out at aid stations at bigger events.

At Grynd, we took that idea and gave it a Canadian spin. Our Organic Energy Waffles are made with real Canadian maple syrup as the main sweetener and simple, clean ingredients you can actually read out loud without stumbling. No weird chemicals, no artificial anything.

They taste like actual food. Because they are actual food. Wild concept, we know.

Why athletes are switching

Your stomach stays happy

This is the big one. Real food is just easier on your digestive system than concentrated syrup. The carbs digest steadily instead of all at once, which means less bloating, less cramping, and way less "please don't let this be the moment" anxiety during a race.

If you've dealt with GI issues mid-effort before, swapping to a natural running fuel like an energy waffle is genuinely worth trying. A lot of athletes tell us it's the first time fuelling on the go has felt comfortable.

They're easy to carry and eat

Energy waffles are flat. They slip right into a jersey pocket, a vest pocket, a hydration pack - wherever. And eating one at race pace is nothing like trying to wrestle a gel packet open with sweaty hands in the cold. You just grab it and go.

Best running snack you'll ever stuff in your pocket? We think so.

Steady energy, no crash

Maple syrup has a lower glycemic index than the artificial sweeteners in most gels, which means you get a steadier climb in energy rather than a spike and drop. You stay in your groove longer without that wall-hitting crash that can torpedo the second half of a long effort.

You'll actually want to eat them

This sounds small but it's huge. When your fuel tastes good, you eat it when you're supposed to. When you eat consistently, you finish strong. It's pretty simple, but it makes a real difference.

When to eat what

Before your workout: Grab an energy waffle about 20–30 minutes before you head out. Easy carbs, quick energy, light on your stomach.

During: This is where our Endurance Butter shines. It's a peanut butter-based gel made with higher natural fats, MCT oil, and protein, so instead of just spiking your blood sugar, it gives you a slower, more sustained burn that keeps you feeling like a human being deep into a long effort. Real food that your body can actually use when you need it most. Squeeze a packet every 45–60 minutes and keep moving.

After: An energy waffle gives you fast carbs to kick off glycogen replenishment right away, and Endurance Butter brings the protein and healthy fats your muscles need to start recovering. Together they're a pretty solid combo for getting your body back on track before the post-race food line opens up.

Built by athletes, for athletes

We're a small Canadian family business out of Calgary and West Kelowna. We got into this because we kept running into the same problem - the stuff on the shelf wasn't cutting it. Too sweet, too artificial, or too rough on the stomach.

So we worked with a traditional Dutch bakery in Ontario to develop an energy waffle that actually performed. Real maple syrup. Organic ingredients. Made in Canada.

Over 50,000 athletes across Canada have tried Grynd products. We're in 100+ retail locations in BC and Alberta. And we're just getting started.

If you've been on the hunt for a solid energy gel alternative, or just want a better way to fuel your training, give the waffles a shot. We think you'll be pretty stoked you did.

Your Greatness is in the Grynd.
